Hello from the 2010 Minneapolis Underground Film Festival. We were so happy to present the very best in underground film from around the world over the December 3-5 weekend 2010. Audiences were entertained by a variety of work and each piece was special, wonderful and unique in it’s own way. This years awards were:

Now in its third consecutive year the film festival continues to search for new and emerging talent and finds a majority of it comes from right here at home in the Twin Cities. This year’s festival will show 60 films over three days that will compete for awards and prizes. The best film, voted on by audience members, will receive 7 full days of soundstage time to make their next film valued at $10,000.

The films start on Friday night with a double program: “Macumba” a short film about a young American family who accidently stir up the forces of black magic in Costa Rica. Produced and directed by the festival’s founder, Greg Yolen said he wanted to put his money where his mouth was and make a film to show at the festival to encourage others to do the same. “Our film festival is different because we aren’t just focused on making a buck. We are all about making art and building a community of local independent filmmakers. “ said Greg Yolen.

Following “Macumba” comes “Abide” a locally produced Minneapolis film, about abuse handed down through the generations of a family, which has generated an intense following online. The extremely successful “Minneapolis Project” follows with a cinematic panorama of life in Minneapolis consisting of 24 new original short films created by 20 Minnesota filmmakers. Later comes “The Taint” an “in-your-face gross sexual humor horror pic” that has been receiving a lot of attention on the national festival circuit.

As usual, the free opening night party will take place Friday night 8PM-2AM at Eat Street’s popular Jasmine26 bar and restaurant where festivalgoers will receive food and drink specials all weekend long. There is also another free party Saturday Night Following “Vixen Highway” in honor of the film’s 10th anniversary.

Day two of the Festival will start with the US Premier of an Australian film “Carmilla Hyde” followed by a day full of dynamic emerging content. Be sure to check out “Speakers Corner”, “Victory Square” and “The Eddies” for documentaries. “Hunting Buddies” and “Vixen Highway” are two locally produced features well worthy of a viewing and stay awake for the late night film “Maximum Shame” watch at your own risk. Sunday is a day also filled with local features “This Time Tomorrow”, “My Art School Summer” and be sure to check out “Red Princess Blues” A short film by Alex Ferrari, with the press comparing him to the next Tarantino.

Many Past filmmakers who have premiered and shown at the Minneapolis Underground Film Festival have gone on to secure distribution, win awards and obtain funding for future projects. This year we look forward to providing filmmakers, actors and audience members the opportunity to interact and bring their underground work to light.

From Now until November 15th discounted tickets are available at the festival’s website minneapolisundergroundfilmfestival.com as well as the full program and schedule. Normal ticket prices are $9 tickets and $49 for festival passes. Audience members get to vote on their favorite films and the awards and prizes are handed out at the end of the day on Sunday 5th December.

A new prize has been announced has been announced for the 2010 Minneapolis Underground Film Festival. The best film of the 2010 festival will receive an award of 7 full days of soundstage studio time valued at $10,000 courtesy of Random Original Productions. Random Original operates three studio areas in their facility.
Pabst Studio is a full size sound stage. It includes a 200 Amps-three phase power, integrated light grid and easy modularity. Pabst is a 40' by 30' for a total nearly 1,200 square feet of shooting space. The lighting grid is 12' from the floor. There is direct access from Pabst into an addition 5,000 addition square feet of studio space.
Rainier Studio is the larger full size studio. It includes dressing rooms, rest rooms, makeup room, and 400 Amps-three phase power. Rainier Studio has two sections combining for a total of 3,900 square feet of shooting space. With 12’ high ceiling and south facing windows, its many photographers dream spot.
Schlitz has a 48’' brick wall, with optional cyclorama setups, with a 11' high ceiling.
In order to qualify films must be submitted for official entry to the minneapolis underground film festival for consideration. Only films in competition will qualify. The deadline for submissions has been extended 2 weeks to September 14th 2010

SUBMIT TO MUFF 2010 SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW OPEN

The Minneapolis Underground Film Festival uncovers the hidden and gives voice to filmmakers from all walks of life. You are invited to submit your film to MUFF 2010.

• All genres and formats will be considered.

• Any number of titles may be submitted by an entrant. However, each title must have its own separate entry form, review copy and entry fee.

•A preview copy (DVD preferred - NTSC only) must be labeled with the title, running time and contact information (including name, address, phone number and email address). Preview copies will not be returned.

• In addition to your DVD or tape submission, please send photos, stills and press kits (web link with high resolution jpegs preferred, but we will also accept DVDs), filmmaker bio, reviews or other publicity materials you may have. If your work is selected, photos will be used for promotion.

• Acknowledgment of receipt of your entry will be made by email. Please include an email address with your submission for this purpose. Preview DVDs and support materials will not be returned. You will be notified of your films status by October 2010.

In today's constantly evolving video revolution more and more independent underground films are been made by unseen media revolutionaries, however most of these unsung heroes of the media world are content to let their work stagnate on Youtube where it will never get see or appreciated by a real audience. Why? Because along with the great responsibility that comes from being an artist also comes fear and insecurity. Today's filmmakers lack the courage to show their work to an audience because they fear rejection they lack the courage to stand up and have their voices heard. This is why the Minneapolis Underground Film Festival was formed. To give voice to those who seek to express themselves and have their work seen. Filmmakers this is a call to you: Submit your film have your work seen and have the courage to show your art to world!
There is a talented new breed of filmmaker out there, a breed of filmmaker that does not play by the established rules, that bridles against the crap they are spoon fed on TV on a daily basis. This new breed of filmmakers realizes that the technology is here all it takes is a new vision, a new way of looking at things to truly showcase your talents. The subject matter can be anything that is why we have freedom of speech. It takes the filmmaker to stand up and proclaim I am an artist and I am going to show the world my vision. However many or most do not because they are so used to feeling the pain of rejection. Most film festivals are run by collusion and corruption and the films are judged not by artists but by politicians and horse traders. It is time to stand up and reclaim our rights as artists to express our vision without fear of the mainstream.
My challenge to all filmmakers out their is simple: SUBMIT YOUR FILM TO THE MINNEAPOLIS UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVAL film and have your work treated with the respect it deserves.
What have you got to lose? Absolutely nothing and everything to gain. We do do not put limitations on the films we accept we are not looking for certain subject matter or genre. I will tell you what we are looking for: ART. The ability to express yourself without fear and to touch others in a way few have ever seen or felt. Is this you? Reverend Steven Johnson Leyba is the kind of man who will paint over the American flag then remind you that "flag etiquette" has been royally pissed on by most major designers without anyone raising an eyebrow. He is a legally ordained Priest in the Church of Satan. He is known in the underground art world as the "Father of Sexpressionism". The man views every kind of bodily excretion as a viable medium with which to paint. He is deeply in touch with his Native American ancestry.

And his performances, well, they're not even legal in some places...

These juxtapositions may seem like a lot to ponder, but they represent just a scratch on the surface. For nearly two years, Reverend Leyba permitted the filmmaker's cameras to observe his life, his art, and his infamous personal rituals. Some of this extraordinarily unique footage charts a terrain of human behavior that has rarely, if ever, been explored within the documentary form.

The Reverend's prolific and varied artistic output reflects his unyielding political and religious opinions. UNSPEAKABLE captures the unusual behavior of this Satanic Priest and takes a firsthand look at the issues that propel his work. The film hops from one inimitable character to the next as they grapple with topics ranging from the denial of the "American Holocaust" to the discovery of new ways to make an explosively sexual/political statement with a whiskey bottle.

The resulting portrait is of an artist with a perversely brilliant vision. He is both humor and fury. He is grotesque, yet possesses the UNSPEAKABLE beauty of a man free enough to confront and embrace his own humanity.

There are two truly great things about this extremely fun film. The first is that von Brown found an actual missile silo in which to shoot. In no-budget underground films, one is used to seeing ordinary locations having some cheap decorations strewn about to sub for unfilmable places, e.g. Mike Kuchar thowing up a couple of tawdry curtains in his Brooklyn bedroom to become a futuristic palace in Sins of the Fleshapoids. But being able to film in a real abandoned military installation gives a nice air of gravitas to Altamont Now. Based on the location alone, the film demands the audience to take everything seriously despite it being an outrageous comedy.

The other great thing about this film is the star-making lead performance by Daniel Louis Rivas as Richard Havoc. Again, the film is a comedy, but von Brown has his actors playing the entire thing straight and Havoc is a completely unsympathetic, ego-bloated lunatic. Rivas has a difficult line to walk. His character is supposed to be over-the-top ridiculous, but Rivas holds enough of himself back so that he’s not buffoonish. Much of the humor of the film comes from Rivas’ straight-laced, deadpan delivery. All the other actors — including Frankie Shaw, Teddy Eck, Matthew Humphreys and Raphael Nash Thompson — all put in superb performances, too, but Rivas has a real forceful charisma that makes him thoroughly compelling to watch.

Dog Man Tony is known for his unwavering honesty and fierce temper. New York Slim speaks in great parables. Joshua Long Gone and Horizontal John are a gray-bearded Huck and Tom. As these real-life characters and many others make their way to nowhere in particular, breathtaking cinematography (which earned top honors at the 2003 Slamdance Film Festival) captures a perspective of the United States -- spectacular sunsets over rocky peaks, vibrant green plains, desolate cityscapes -- that could only be seen from a rail car and sets it to haunting original songs by Tom Waits.

The promise of freedom is as romantic as a Beat Generation travelogue, but real life for the train hoppers is far from ideal. They have run-ins with family members and police; they pick food from trash cans; and way too may are alcoholics and addicts. Yet they know they've been discarded by mainstream society, which makes their bond to one another that much stronger. Many are also former military men, and that experience is born out in the stories, rituals, and honor among them as their paths cross beside the tracks.

Long Gone poignantly captures a marginalized homeless group for which misconceptions have far too often prevailed and shows that the yearning for community doesn't change much from person to person, even if the definition of community does.

SNUFF: a documentary about killing on camera is a documentary examining the existence of films where people are murdered on camera and the culture that surrounds said films. Through interviews with former FBI Profilers, Cultural Academics, and Film Historians the film delves into the subject by attempting to define what a Snuff Film is. Snuff Films are, by legal definition, made with the intention of distribution to a relatively mass market. However, the FBI claims there is no evidence to prove the existence of Snuff, and, therefore, Snuff is a myth. Many others have found Snuff Films to be at the most a perpetuation of American violent culture. This ideology is usually tied in with extreme horror or cult films that have been investigated as suspected Snuff, all of which have been found “innocent” of actually capturing a murder on film.

The history of Snuff begins in the late 1960’s, a time in which Snuff was primarily a tool for those who opposed Pornography. Different political groups attacked the Pornography Industry by claiming Snuff Films, the most abhorrent concept in film, was linked with Pornography. Soon after, rumors began circulating that serial killers such as Charles Manson made Snuff Films that have circulated among various cult members. Specifically the documentary deeply examines the infamous serial killer case of Leonard Lake and Charles Ng who brutally tortured, sexually abused and murdered their victims on camera.

SNUFF also analyzes the relationship between war and this “myth” that has seemingly been debunked time and time again, yet continues to thrive. The Snuff Film was born during the time of the Vietnam War, and it is clear that Snuff and war remain intrinsically linked. This is shown through an examination of the current Iraq War. Specifically, the documentary exposes the videos of beheaded Americans as the newest manifestation of Snuff Films, and that these images are only at the surface of this genesis.

SNUFF: a documentary about killing on camera discusses the ways in which the existence or non-existence of these films bring together such unlikely bedfellows as Pornography, news media, war, horror films, and serial killers, molding them into a truly monstrous whole. It depicts a dark reality that has been largely ignored by the media, and yet is one of the most disturbing concepts of the last century and needs to either be proven or laid to rest.

While the man is nervous at their arrival he is also sympathetic to the situation offering his phone and a place to stay when help cannot come immediately. Time passes and the travelers do not leave setting in motion events of increasing peculiarity. One of them begins appreciating the environment gaining access to the daily routine while the other stays isolated and distant. The farmer offers insight and knowledge to the curious traveler furthering an awareness of the future they all must choose. But it is a future of overlap, timelines, and scraps feeding on the spaces of cinematic inevitability.
